Bettina von Lieres teaches and researches in the Centre for Critical Development Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough. She teaches courses on democratisation and citizen participation in the global South.
From 1991 – 2002 she held university research and teaching positions in Cape Town, South Africa. From 2002 – 2011 she participated as a lead researcher in a transnational development research network, the Development Research Centre for Citizenship, Participation and Accountability, which was hosted by the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, UK. From 2008 – 2011 she co-convened an international teaching and learning network which brought together over twenty development researchers and practitioners from eight countries to develop a set of global courses on citizenship, democracy and poverty.
She is the co-founder of a new global research network, the Collaboration for Research on Democracy (CORD).
