Dr. Moses Coady<\/strong>\u00a0search for &#8220;<em>Moses Coady&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pictures:\u00a0<\/strong>To find\u00a0<strong>pictures<\/strong>\u00a0use the word\u00a0<em><strong>photograph<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 For example, if you want a photograph of a co-op in Cheticamp type both\u00a0<em>Cheticamp<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>photograph<\/em>\u00a0in the search box.\u00a0 For pictures of Fr. Jimmy Tompkins, type both\u00a0<em>Tompkins<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>photograph<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Audio:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you want to\u00a0<strong>hear<\/strong>\u00a0Dr. Coady, radio programs, speeches and interviews type the word\u00a0<strong><em>audio<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>in the search box.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Video:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>If you want to\u00a0<strong>watch<\/strong>\u00a0videos type the word\u00a0<strong><em>video<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in the search box.\u00a0 There are not many videos in the digital collection yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When you find too many<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>results<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Try\u00a0 using more than one word so that you don&#8217;t\u00a0 get as many documents.\u00a0 For example,\u00a0 if you search for\u00a0<em>co-operative\u00a0<\/em>you find more than 500 documents.\u00a0 However, if you search for\u00a0<em>co-operative farming<\/em>\u00a0you find fewer documents.<\/p>\n<p>Some words and phrases are very common in this collection.\u00a0 The words Coady and Extension show up in almost every document because the documents come from the &#8220;Coady International Institute&#8221; and the &#8220;StFX Extension Department&#8221; files.\u00a0 If you want to search for these words try using the &#8220;<strong>advanced search<\/strong>&#8221; so you have more options to limit your search.<\/p>\n<p>You may want to search for a\u00a0<strong>phrase<\/strong>, such as &#8220;Extension Bulletin&#8221;,\u00a0 &#8220;Moses Coady&#8221; or &#8220;Antigonish Movement&#8221;. The &#8220;<strong>advanced search<\/strong>&#8221; lets you search for a phrase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When you do not find anything or enough:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Try different versions and spellings of words such as\u00a0<em>co-op<\/em>,\u00a0<em>co-operative<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>cooperative<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>neighbour<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>neighbor<\/em>,\u00a0<em>labour<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>labor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Try shorter versions of the word. Truncation using an asterisk * will retrieve multiple keywords, e.g., fish* finds fishers, fisheries, fish stock<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Advanced Search Tips<\/h3>\n<p>Choose the \u201cAdvanced search\u201d option at the top and on the right of the screen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Search:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Across all fields<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your first option in advanced search is to search words that show up anywhere in the book or the title or description of the photographs, audio files or video.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All of the words<\/strong>\u00a0means that every word must be somewhere in the document.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The exact phrase<\/strong>\u00a0means that the words must be together in the exact order. For example, searching \u201cAntigonish Movement\u201d would not bring up documents that talked about a movement to plant trees in Antigonish County.\u00a0 Using the exact phrase is a good way to limit your search to just what you want.<\/p>\n<p>A few good exact phrases you may want to try:<\/p>\n<p><em>Moses Coady<\/em>\u00a0 &#8211; this would eliminate all the times the material is about the Coady International Institute and not Dr. Moses Coady.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><em>still image<\/em>\u00a0 &#8211; Each photograph in the collection is called a \u201cstill image\u201d so if you only want to see the photographs use this<\/p>\n<p><strong>Any of the words<\/strong>\u00a0makes your search larger.\u00a0 Only one of your words needs to be in the document.\u00a0 This is a good search to use if you want to search for the word co-operative.\u00a0 You may want to try using the words co-operative* cooperative,* co-op.\u00a0 If you want to find everything to do with the aquatic resources you might want to search fish* ocean aquatic<\/p>\n<p><strong>None of the words<\/strong>\u00a0eliminates words.\u00a0 A search for \u201chousing\u201d not \u201cTompkinsville\u201d would find everything that mentioned housing but would eliminate all those that also mention Tomkinsville.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Search:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Selected fields<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can also choose to limit your search by searching only for those by a particular author or words in a title by choosing the \u201cSelected fields\u201d search \u2013 located directly above the search boxes on the advanced search page.<\/p>\n<p>You can choose the type of search:\u00a0<strong>All of the words; The exact phrase; Any of the words; None of the words<\/strong>\u00a0by clicking on the down arrow.<\/p>\n<p>You can choose the field to search by clicking on the down arrow beside the box that says \u201cTitle\u201d or \u201cSubject\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In this list\u00a0<strong>author<\/strong>\u00a0is called \u201c<strong>Creator<\/strong>\u201d. So, if you want to search by author, for example to find items that were written by Dr. Coady, then you should put \u201cMoses Coady\u201d in the search box and choose \u201cCreator\u201d as your search field.<\/p>\n<p>Finding photographs: Search for \u201cstill image\u201d in the field \u201cType\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finding audio files: Search for \u201csound\u201d in the field \u201cType\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Search:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>By Proximity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cby proximity\u201d search is helpful if you have words that are often show up close to each other but not together.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you want to search for \u201cTown of Antigonish\u201d you should use the proximity search with \u201ctown\u201d in one search box and \u201cAntigonish\u201d in the other and within 2.\u00a0 You will find items that mention the \u201ctown of Antigonish\u201d as well as \u201cAntigonish town\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Search:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>By Date<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Search by date is a good way to narrow your search.\u00a0 For example, you could search for just works published between 1900 and 1920.\u00a0 Or photographs from certain dates.<\/p>\n<p>There is a caution when limiting by date.
