This program is for community leaders passionate about constructively addressing conflict and building cultures of peace.
Conflict happens and manifests in various dynamic forms in relationships and communities across the globe. How we think about and respond to conflict informs the outcomes of conflict, as well as building and amplifying peace. Addressing conflict constructively directly connects to building peace in relationships and communities.
Participants will learn to create inclusive spaces and engage in a range of activities to build their skills in non-violent communication, conflict analysis, and conflict resolution. Participants will learn about mediation skills and how to design programs for conflict transformation and peacebuilding as well as contribute to networks for conflict resolution, reconciliation, and peacebuilding.
During this course, you will:
- explore theories and practices of community-based conflict transformation and peacebuilding;
- recognize and respond to gender dynamics in peace building approaches;
- build skills to analyze root causes of conflicts, influence public policy, negotiate and mediate;
- design and deliver conflict transformation and peacebuilding education programs;
- gain knowledge about non-violent techniques for transforming intra-community;
- develop values and attitudes that nurture a culture of peace and non-violence.
- acquire understanding of participatory approaches to conflict transformation and peacebuilding; and
- gain the ability to contribute to global networks for conflict resolution, reconciliation and peacebuilding.
Who should take the Program?
This certificate is ideal for people who want to work collaboratively to transform conflicts and create an enabling environment for peace and development. This includes community-based organizations, NGOs, government departments, universities, international organizations, and individual community builders.
Approach to learning
Coady courses include a variety of participatory and experiential learning methods by which participants share their experiences and deepen their learnings. These include lecture presentations, small group discussions, role-plays and simulation exercises, video/written case studies, guest speakers, and skill-building exercises. Participants benefit from visits to local field sites to engage practitioners and dialogue with stakeholders. All presentations and instructional materials are in English.
Fees
A mix of institutional and private donors who share Coady Institute’s vision of community-based, citizen-lead change subsidize the institute’s educational programs. As possible, Coady will provide qualifying candidates with a partial bursary to assist with course fees. However, all participants will be responsible for fees payable of at least $2,250 CAD, as well as travel and other costs. Fees are payable prior to the start of the selected course.
