The political and social character of the German agrarian movement is examined. While German farmers were dominated by conservative interests, Fairbairn questions class-oriented approaches to the study of the farmers' common protest against finance, capitalism and urban elites. The contrast with Germany shows the comparative unity of the early prairie farm movement.
