On the theory of credit cooperatives: equity and onlending in a multi-tier system -- a concept paper

This report examines credit unions, with three objectives: to structure the issues involved in the discussion of credit unions in developing countries as a specific type of provider of financial services for poorer target groups, to examine the role of equity capital in a credit cooperative, and to draw up a framework for an empirical investigation of the factors which determine whether or not credit cooperatives are successful.
