This paper describes the state of elderly care in Japan, examines the government's role in providing care and considers the market's role before and after the introduction of Long-Term Care Insurance.  It also looks at patterns in state provision of childcare. The paper examines the idea of a care diamond and applies it to care for the elderly and children in Japan.
