The Fleming Award was created in 2000 by Katie’s classmates, family, and friends following her untimely death while working for the United Nations in Tanzania. Over the last two decades, the award has enabled 20 women leaders from sub-Saharan Africa to come to St. Francis Xavier University’s Coady Institute to learn and share with other change leaders their work and ideas to advance social justice and equity in their communities. The award was conceived as a living memorial to Katie and her lifetime commitment to uplifting women and children in developing nations.
Until the Covid-19 pandemic struck last year, the Fleming award winners came from their home countries in Africa to Antigonish to study and share knowledge in-person at the Coady. Due to the pandemic, that was not possible in 2020 or this year. As a result, this year’s award recipients, Rabi and Caroline, are taking part in three of Coady’s online courses from their home countries.
