On 16 September, Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman, was brutally murdered by the morality police of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Apparently, this was done to put her in place and as a punishment for not wearing the hijab ‘properly’. This is not a one-time incident, but part of a systemic patriarchal apartheid regime. It has sparked protests across Iran and well beyond. In the face of terror and repression, we are witnessing a feminist revolution marked by uprisings in various locations across the country and an outcry around the world.
Coady Institute expresses our solidarity with the progressive people of Iran and acknowledges the struggles of all people facing oppression, subject to the historical development of dominant power relations. Transnational solidarity with allies in Iran is more important than ever.
We continue to respect and support leaders who bravely advocate for social change that ensures justice, rights, and well-being for all.
