In advance of International Women’s Day (IWD) (March 8), Coady Institute will be hosting an online seminar featuring two graduates of the Global Change Leaders (2016) program. Salome Nduta and Jaya Luintel are using their learnings from Coady to champion the rights of women in Kenya and Nepal. They will share their experiences online March 7, from 9:30 to 11 am (AST) during a Coady conversation on Defending Women’s Rights in Times of Uncertainty.

“Salome and Jaya have each graduated from multiple Coady programs and we are excited they are able to join us to share about their work,” Eileen Alma, Coady Institute’s Executive Director, says.

“Both are strong women activists recognized not only in their own countries for their efforts but internationally as well. We thought they were the perfect examples of how Coady and our graduates are accelerating action for gender equality which is the theme for IWD 2025.”

As a human rights defender, community organizer, and environmental activist in Kenya, Salome is committed to social justice and the empowerment of marginalized communities. She is the founder of the Women Human Rights Defenders Hub which provides mentorship, protection, and advocacy support for women activists.

Salome has played a key role in international efforts to advance the safety and well-being of African human rights defenders. Recognized for her impactful work, she continues to champion gender equality, community-driven change, and an African-led transition to renewable energy across Kenya and beyond.

A prominent, nationally acclaimed journalist and women’s rights advocate, Jaya has designed and executed radio projects focusing on women’s empowerment, gender justice, health and nutrition, HIV /AIDS, and violence against women. She was chosen as one of BBC’s 100 Influential Women of 2014 and has been internationally recognized for her communications work in the areas of gender, women’s rights, and the empowerment of marginalized people.

Jaya is board president of The Story Kitchen which is driven by the passionate belief that upholding the stories of women can unravel systems of gender oppression and patriarchy that continue to exist in Nepal.
