Rosario Diaz Garavito (Global Change Leaders, 2015) is the Founder and Chief Executive Director of The Millennials Movement – a youth-led, nonprofit organization in Peru that strives to engage citizens, especially youth, and social actors in the sustainable development process of their communities. They are engaging 10,000 people annually.
In 2015, Rosario travelled from her home in Peru to the small community of Antigonish, Canada to attend Coady’s Global Change Leaders program – a seven-week program where women from developing countries strengthen their leadership capacities to contribute to innovation and change in their organizations and communities.
Now, Rosario will be attending the University of Chicago as one of 32 Obama Foundation Scholars. In its second year, the program is open to young leaders who are making a difference in their community. The scholarship will provide the opportunity for Rosario to complete a Master of Arts degree in International Development and Policy.
“My participation in the Global Change Leaders program at Coady helped me to improve the work I do with youth and civil society on the frame of sustainable development,” Rosario says. “It gave me the tools and guidance to relate the fieldwork I do with governance processes and to include a people-centered approach in the programs The Millennials Movement delivers.”
In addition to attending the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, a recent press release says scholars will also have the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom.
“Scholars will have the chance to participate in experiences throughout Chicago, including on the South Side where the foundation is located and where President Obama got his start in community organizing,” the release says.
“By engaging with the local community, students will have the opportunity to complement what they learn in the classroom and also to share and exchange perspectives on service and change with local Chicago leaders.
