Creating Connections through Art

Livelihoods and Markets (2017)

I was a Coady student in 2017. I love travelling and learning other cultures and using my camera, to take photographs to document my travel and the people that I found. Last year, I made a one month journey in the heart of West China. I met with Tibetan people and fell in love with their culture. One day, in Labrang Monastery I met an old lady that gave me food and spoke in Tibetan that I totally don’t understand. She gave me the bread and she smiled at me. Another day, I met another old lady that gave me the fruits from her yard. I am thinking that generosity and kindness are a universal language. No matter our culture, language, nationality, skin, religion, etc. We even don’t need to speak to share that.

St. Francis Xavier University and Coady Institute stand on the lands of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded home of the Mi’kmaw. We express our deep gratitude and appreciation to the generations of Mi’kmaw who, since time immemorial, have loved and stewarded these lands and the beings who call them home. Colonization is not just history; it exists in the present tense. While we strive to decolonize ourselves and our University, we know there is still much for us to learn.

We are committed to doing the hard work of self-reflection and to repairing relationships with the Mi’kmaw on whose lands we reside, including embracing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action and embodying their spirit in our plans to move forward with our University.
