Country: Kenya

Current Organization: Kenya Alliance for Advancement of Children (KAACR)

Organization at the time you received Katie Fleming Award from Coady: Kenya Alliance for Advancement of Children (KAACR)

How did receiving the Katie Fleming award inspire you?

The recognition and appreciation made me realize the work I am doing with children is not in vain. It made me desire to continue seeking for better and more strategic ways to serve the children and communities I work with, and for.

What does your organization do, how does it help develop your community?

y organization advocates and promotes the rights of children and youth through lobbying for development, implementation, and dissemination of various county, national, and international policies for children. We also advocate for the increase in budgetary allocations for children through citizen participation in the process. My community now appreciates children as partners in development, who are meaningfully participating in public forums making their views heard

How did your studies at Coady improve your ability to be a change leader?

One of the most important things I learned at Coady was that as a leader I am not the custodian of all knowledge. I learned to appreciate the knowledge held by others and the intelligence they have. I am now able to harness this knowledge and intelligence among the people I serve/lead, to make my leadership even more authentic by utilizing it.

I am not the custodian of all knowledge. I learned to appreciate the knowledge held by others. I am now able to harness this knowledge … to make my leadership even more authentic by utilizing it.

St. Francis Xavier University and Coady Institute stand on the lands of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded home of the Mi’kmaw. We express our deep gratitude and appreciation to the generations of Mi’kmaw who, since time immemorial, have loved and stewarded these lands and the beings who call them home. Colonization is not just history; it exists in the present tense. While we strive to decolonize ourselves and our University, we know there is still much for us to learn.

We are committed to doing the hard work of self-reflection and to repairing relationships with the Mi’kmaw on whose lands we reside, including embracing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action and embodying their spirit in our plans to move forward with our University.
