Zelalem Mulugeta

Education Program Coordinator

Concern Worldwide, Ethiopia

Concern Worldwide helps people living in extreme poverty achieve major improvements in their lives, which last and spread without ongoing support from Concern. To achieve this mission, we engage in long-term development work, build resilience, respond to emergencies, and seek to address the root causes of poverty through our development education and advocacy work.

I am responsible for overall program design, planning, and implementation of education projects. I develop project plans and implement teacher training initiatives, particularly around the needs of out-of-school girls, adult literacy, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). I lead the strategic development, financial management, and implementation of adolescent girls’ education programs and ensure effective transition to different livelihood programs. I ensure issues of gender, equality, safe learning, accountability, risk, and vulnerability are addressed and monitored.

“I hope I will increase my community leadership skills which will be a cornerstone for my change initiative. I am also eager to study the Asset Based Community Led Development approach and the experience of the Antigonish community in this approach which will be one of the takeaways from my stay at Coady.”

St. Francis Xavier University and Coady Institute stand on the lands of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded home of the Mi’kmaw. We express our deep gratitude and appreciation to the generations of Mi’kmaw who, since time immemorial, have loved and stewarded these lands and the beings who call them home. Colonization is not just history; it exists in the present tense. While we strive to decolonize ourselves and our University, we know there is still much for us to learn.

We are committed to doing the hard work of self-reflection and to repairing relationships with the Mi’kmaw on whose lands we reside, including embracing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action and embodying their spirit in our plans to move forward with our University.
