Social Cohesion – Referral Assistant

International Organization for Migration (IOM), Ethiopia

International Organization for Migration (IOM) supports migrants across the world, developing effective responses to the shifting dynamics of migration and, as such, is a key source of advice on migration policy and practice. The organization works in emergency situations, developing the resilience of all people on the move, and particularly those in situations of vulnerability, as well as building capacity within governments to manage all forms and impacts of mobility.

I support the social cohesion related activities targeting ex-combatants as part of an IOM program focused on the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration portfolio (DDR). I have organized and conducted community-level inclusive cultural activities including awareness campaigns, and community dialogue events to reduce stigma and discrimination against ex-combatants. In this work, I have conducted appropriate capacity building and technical skill development trainings in collaboration with regional peace and security bureaus to sustain the community dialogue.

“As a young leader, my experience and knowledge from Coady has been eye-opening. It will make me more resourceful and strategic with diverse techniques and new approaches to resist the unequal power struggle of society.”

St. Francis Xavier University and Coady Institute stand on the lands of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded home of the Mi’kmaw. We express our deep gratitude and appreciation to the generations of Mi’kmaw who, since time immemorial, have loved and stewarded these lands and the beings who call them home. Colonization is not just history; it exists in the present tense. While we strive to decolonize ourselves and our University, we know there is still much for us to learn.

We are committed to doing the hard work of self-reflection and to repairing relationships with the Mi’kmaw on whose lands we reside, including embracing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action and embodying their spirit in our plans to move forward with our University.
