Coady International Institute extends its gratitude to former Coady Director Dr. Harris (Eric) Amit (1991-1994) and his family (children Minoli, Hilary, Udeni and son-in-law Peter Tufts) for their recent generous donation in memory of his late wife Amybelle Amit. The donations will enhance the “Iromi Amit Women Leaders’ Scholarship Endowment” established in 2009 at Coady Institute. The endowment is an important legacy of Dr. Amit’s daughter Iromi, who throughout her career with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, was a pioneer in her time advocating to open doors for women in leadership roles, understanding the importance and impact of gender equality.

Family members presented the donation to Vice President and current Director of Coady June Webber in the company of Amit’s great-granddaughter Eva Amybelle who is named after his late wife. Joining them were family members Claire Hamilton (granddaughter), Hilary Amit (son), and Minoli Amit (daughter). Coady educators who worked with Dr. Amit and knew his late wife Amybelle – Anthony Scoggins (Education Program Director), Gord Cunningham (Assistant Director), and Alison Mathie (Associate) – were also in attendance for the presentation.

Sr. Betty Jose

The significant added contribution will help grow the endowment and its ability to support women leaders to travel to Antigonish and study at Coady. This year the Iromi Amit Women Leaders’ Scholarship supported Sr. Betty Jose who graduated from Coady’s 2018 Diploma in Development Leadership program.

I came to Coady to become more efficient in my ministry, especially to be fruitful in my work of community development, the empowerment of women, youth, and differently abled,” says Jose. “I want to be a ray of hope and a blessing to the marginalized.”
