NOTE:

This course is taught from a Canadian perspective for participants from the G20. The G20 comprises 19 countries and the European Union. The 19 countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Increasingly, the importance of community-led innovation and research is being recognized by funders and other stakeholders as important to the resiliency and sustainability of communities and community-based organizations. This perception is rooted in the growing body of evidence supporting the importance of the community’s voice at the table when creating programs and policies that have an impact on them. Research Methods for Social Impact is designed to enhance participants’ capacity in developing the data gathering and analysis tools for research and evaluation for social impact.

Through an interactive learning approach that models adult learning principles and uses asynchronous and synchronous learning modalities, participants will explore the social and ethical implications of community-based research, develop data gathering tools such as survey questionnaires, interview and focus group techniques, investigate approaches to data analysis and management, and examine ways to communicate results to different audiences.

Participants are encouraged to attend the 2.5 hour live class session each week. However, the live session will be recorded and available to participants through the course’s Moodle site if other commitments conflict. Course facilitators estimate students will need to set aside 6 hours a week to work through the course materials and assignments and attend the live (or listen to) the weekly session. A participant’s time commitment can vary, depending on how long it takes to get through the weekly required readings / videos, or if there are assignments due. There will also be the opportunity for one-on-one support and coaching from a course facilitator. Participants who successfully complete the course requirements will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Coady International Institute of St. Francis Xavier University. Fees

The tuition fee for this course is $850. Coady Institute strives to ensure change leaders working in communities around the world have access to its courses. This is made possible through the provision of bursaries that are funded by many individual and institutional donors. Partial bursaries of up to $475 are available for qualifying candidates. Through Coady’s Circle of Abundance, a limited number of full bursaries are available to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit participants residing in Canada. Applicants will be able to express their interest in obtaining a bursary during the application process. Those receiving a bursary will be responsible for paying the balance of their tuition before the designated deadline.

Full bursaries are available from the Centre for Employment Innovation (CEI) for eligible applicants from Nova Scotia. This includes applicants working for a program or agency engaged in employment services delivery, or engaged in social innovation activities to alleviate poverty, strengthen livelihoods, and create more equitable employment and entrepreneurial opportunities with and for systemically oppressed groups. For more information, visit the CEI Bursary Program page.
