This online course is for community leaders passionate about constructively addressing conflict and building cultures of peace. 

Conflict happens. It manifests in various dynamic forms in relationships and communities across the globe. How we think about and respond to conflict informs the conflict, the outcomes of conflict, community development, as well as the opportunities for building and amplifying peace. Peace happens. Addressing conflict constructively directly connects to building peace in relationships and communities. Peace and conflict are determinants of health for individuals and communities.   

In this course, participants will examine conflict and peace through a community development perspective, engage in a range of activities to build their skills in non-violent communication, conflict analysis, and conflict resolution. Participants will learn mediation skills and how to develop participatory approaches to conflict transformation and peacebuilding, as well as contribute to networks for conflict resolution, reconciliation, and peacebuilding.

 During this course, you will: 

  •  explore theories and practices of community-based conflict transformation and peacebuilding; 
  • recognize and respond to gender dynamics in peace building approaches; 
  • examine peace as a social determinant of health, particularly in a (post) pandemic context. 
  • build skills to analyze root causes of conflicts, negotiate, and mediate; 
  • develop values and attitudes that nurture a culture of peace and non-violence; 
  • acquire understanding of participatory approaches to conflict transformation and peacebuilding; and, 
  • build and contribute to a global network of conflict transformation and peace leaders. 

Time Requirement 

You should be prepared to dedicate six to eight hours per week, over the course of nine weeks.

 Who should take this course? 

This course is ideal for people who want to work collaboratively to transform conflicts and create an enabling environment for peace and development. This includes community-based organizations, NGOs, government departments, universities, international organizations, and individual community builders.  

Fees 

The tuition fee for this course is $650 CAD. Coady strives to ensure that individuals working with marginalized communities locally and globally have access to its educational programs. This is made possible through the provision of bursaries that are generously funded by both individual and institutional donors. Bursaries of $300 are available for select candidates applying for online courses. Those receiving a bursary will be responsible for paying the balance of $350 CAD before the designated deadline.
