Investing in Leadership: Participants’ Sacrifices Inspire Coady Employee to Give

In her 27 years at Coady Institute, Finance Officer Lola Corkum has witnessed countless stories of determination and transformation. While she has spent her career working behind the scenes, it is the commitment of Coady’s participants that inspires her as a donor herself.

“I’ve seen participants make incredible sacrifices to study at Coady,” Lola says. “Some raised money for tuition and airfare, others left their families behind or continued working while taking their courses. Their commitment inspired me to give back.”

Lola says she didn’t fully understand the meaning of Coady’s transformative learning until she participated in the Community Development Leadership by Women (2011) certificate.

“Learning alongside women from around the world helped me recognize that leadership isn’t only about being in the spotlight,” she says. “I realized that my own contributions mattered and that I, too, could be a leader.”

Looking ahead, Lola remains optimistic because Coady’s approach continues to resonate with learners around the world.

“People leave our programs with positive experiences because Coady believes communities should drive the change they want to see,” Lola says. “That’s what makes our work so meaningful.”

Her message to others considering a gift is simple: “Your support goes toward something truly special. Coady’s citizen-driven approach helps people become agents of their own change.”

As both a long-time staff member and donor, Lola hopes Coady will continue to champion citizen-led development and the transformative learning that has defined the Institute for generations.
