Historical origins of ethnic problems on Fiji, causes of their intensification recently, and attempts at resolution are examined. Indigenous Fijians and immigrant Indians comprise half the population. Colonial policies of segregation reinforced cultural, economic and religious differences. Humans rights violations by post-independence regimes are identified.
