This paper provides a survey of the extent and rates of deforestation, underlying processes, social consequences and policy implications. Some of the currently used definitions are questioned. Beyond poverty, population and modernization, causes such as development policies, land tenure, large-scale domestic and foreign agricultural corporations are examined.
