About This Directory
This is a collaborative, evolving Resource Directory. We hope for continuing input from around the world!
The goal of the Directory is to provide a vehicle for development workers, activists, policy-oriented researchers and scholars to share their knowledge of critical resources dealing with gender and sustainable rural development. We also hope to challenge the myth that good print and audio-visual materials are only available from the so-called “developed countries”, hence our focus on items produced in the South.
The project was initiated in 1995 by Sue Adams, former Librarian at the Coady International Institute, and Nan Peacocke, Publications Editor at WAND. A grant from the Mary MacNeil Fund for Internationalization at St. Francis Xavier University supported the preliminary design process.
A number of individuals should be recognized for their significant roles in the development of the Directory. First and foremost is Catherine Irving, who compiled, edited and entered submissions from other contributors, as well as providing a substantial base of entries from which to build. Nancy Peters, working at the Northeast Thailand Foundation (NET), kindly shared numerous entries from a bibliography she was compiling. Elaine MacLean of the Angus L Macdonald Library contributed hours of technical advice and assistance, both delivered with admirable patience and good humour. Special thanks also go to the individual contributors from around the world who are helping the Directory to grow and develop.
We will also continue to accept submissions in paper as well as electronic format, so as not to exclude those who are not ‘webbed’. Do you have an entry to contribute to this ongoing project? Let us know.
How To Search This Directory
Complete Resource Directory
Here you will find the entire file, arranged alphabetically by titles of the items. At present, the Directory contains about 80 substantial entries, so simple browsing may prove a little tedious. You might prefer to use the ‘Search’ or ‘Find’ feature of your Web browser to enter particular key words that you think will help you pick out records of interest.
Subject Lists
We have divided the entries among seven broad categories to facilitate more focused searching. Each entry appears in only one of the categories, so each general group may not include every entry which touches on the subject.
After looking through the entries in your main area of interest, you may wish to return to the Complete Directory and use the ‘Search’ or ‘Find’ function – as noted above – to find additional items.
Most of the categories are hopefully self-explanatory, but some encompass a number of different aspects. For example:
- includes Training, Group Building, Research Methods (PRA/RRA), and Evaluation
- includes Savings and Credit, Microenterprise, and Co-operatives
- includes Human Rights issues , particularly Women’s Rights and Labour Rights
The Address List
Wherever possible, addresses for publishers and organizations mentioned in the Directory have been listed to help locate or obtain resources. The addresses given here are the most recent ones we have found: if you can update an entry, please let us know!
To Contribute an Entry
We welcome submissions from around the world. The hope is that this Directory will be a truly international resource and an opportunity for information sharing.
As the intention of the Directory is to highlight materials produced outside the “industrialized nations”, we ask that you keep this in mind when selecting items you think should be included.
Print, audio-visual, and electronic resources can all be listed in the Directory. In general, items to be entered should:
- * include a gender perspective
- * have a rural focus, or be applicable to rural development
- * consider sustainability
- * take a critical view (ie. include some social analysis as well as description)
