Title

Monitoring poverty as if gender mattered: a methodology for rural Bangladesh

Author

Kabeer, Naila

Description

Aggregated measures of poverty are insensitive to changes or inequalities among sub-groups of the poor. Empirical material on poverty in rural Bangladesh suggests that women experience poverty differently and unequally to men becoming impoverished through different processes. A key indicator approach may ensure that a gender dimension is built into poverty monitoring exercises.
