Rights passages from 'near death' to 'new life': AIDS activism and treatment testimonies in South Africa

The paper examines how AIDS activism in South Africa contributes to a citizenship concerned with both rights-based struggles and shared meanings of the experiences of illness and stigmatisation of AIDS sufferers. The paper argues that it is the activist mediation and the telling of AIDS-related traumatic experiences that faciliates AIDS activist commitment and grassroots mobilisation.
