Promoting Accountable Democracies
Citizens, armed with knowledge and motivated by the need to improve the quality of life for all, can be powerful agents of change. It is these citizens, acting collectively, who can create enabling environments for development and sustainable futures for their families, communities and countries.
The Coady Institute promotes citizen-led transformation of the institutions, policies and processes of states that limit or block people’s participation in the social, economic and political decisions that affect their lives.
The Institute works with networks, associations, social movements and other civil society organizations, particularly those involving women, youth and indigenous peoples, to strengthen their capacity to effectively raise their voices, and to hold duty-bearers to account.
In addition, the Coady Institute recognizes the importance of building relationships and broad-based coalitions for change across sectors, especially in countries where new democratic spaces are emerging. Through its educational programs, action research, strategic partnerships, and convening role the Coady Institute works to enhance the capacity and confidence of citizen leaders to contribute to the wealth and well-being of all in their society .
