Using village mechanisms to expand the frontier of microfinance: the case of the Caisses Villageoises in Mali

This case study illustrates a successful process of institution building that has been able to overcome many significant difficulties that expansion of microfinance faces in Africa. The case study derives several lessons for organizational design and for the provision of external technical assistance. The case study also identifies several potential threats to the system's continued success.
